An aircraft Earth station for general aviation
While the focus has been international commercial air traffic, an opportunity exists to provide satellite communications to smaller aircraft. For these users equipment cost and weight critically impact the decision to install satellite communications equipment. Less apparent to the operator is the need for a system infrastructure that will be supported both regionally and internationally and that is compatible with the ground segment being installed for commercial aeronautical satellite communications. A system concept is described as well as a low cost terminal that are intended to satisfy the small aircraft market

Quantum Multibaker Maps: Extreme Quantum Regime
We introduce a family of models for quantum mechanical, one-dimensional
random walks, called quantum multibaker maps (QMB). These are Weyl
quantizations of the classical multibaker models previously considered by
Gaspard, Tasaki and others. Depending on the properties of the phases
parametrizing the quantization, we consider only two classes of the QMB maps:
uniform and random. Uniform QMB maps are characterized by phases which are the
same in every unit cell of the multibaker chain. Random QMB maps have phases
that vary randomly from unit cell to unit cell. The eigenstates in the former
case are extended while in the latter they are localized. In the uniform case
and for large , analytic solutions can be obtained for the time
dependent quantum states for periodic chains and for open chains with absorbing
boundary conditions. Steady state solutions and the properties of the
relaxation to a steady state for a uniform QMB chain in contact with
``particle'' reservoirs can also be described analytically. The analytical
results are consistent with, and confirmed by, results obtained from numerical
methods. We report here results for the deep quantum regime (large ) of
the uniform QMB, as well as some results for the random QMB. We leave the
moderate and small results as well as further consideration of the

Tunable Depletion Potentials Driven By Shape Variation Of Surfactant Micelles
Depletion interaction potentials between micron-sized colloidal particles are induced by nanometer-scale surfactant micelles composed of hexaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E6), and they are measured by video microscopy. The strength and range of the depletion interaction is revealed to arise from variations in shape anisotropy of the surfactant micelles. This shape anisotropy increases with increasing sample temperature. By fitting the colloidal interaction potentials to theoretical models, we extract micelle length and shape anisotropy as a function of temperature. This work introduces shape anisotropy tuning as a means to control interparticle interactions in colloidal suspensions, and it shows how the interparticle depletion potentials of micron-scale objects can be employed to probe the shape and size of surrounding macromolecules at the nanoscale

Characterization of Dry-Air Aged Granules of Silver-Functionalized Silica Aerogel
This is a letter report to complete level 3 milestone "Assess aging characteristics of silica aerogels" for DOE FCRD program. Recently, samples of Ag0-functionalized silica aerogel were aged in flowing dry air for up to 6 months and then loaded with iodine. This dry-air aging simulated the impact of long-term exposure to process gases during process idling. The 6-month aged sample exhibited an iodine sorption capacity of 32 mass%, which was 9 mass % lower than that for an un-aged Ag0-functionalized silica aerogel. In an attempt to understand this decrease in sorption capacity, we characterized physical properties of the aged samples with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed no impact of aging on the aerogel microstructure or the silver nanoparticles in the aerogel, including their spatial distribution and morphology

State Transition Algorithm
In terms of the concepts of state and state transition, a new heuristic
random search algorithm named state transition algorithm is proposed. For
continuous function optimization problems, four special transformation
operators called rotation, translation, expansion and axesion are designed.
Adjusting measures of the transformations are mainly studied to keep the
balance of exploration and exploitation. Convergence analysis is also discussed
about the algorithm based on random search theory. In the meanwhile, to
strengthen the search ability in high dimensional space, communication strategy
is introduced into the basic algorithm and intermittent exchange is presented
to prevent premature convergence. Finally, experiments are carried out for the
algorithms. With 10 common benchmark unconstrained continuous functions used to
test the performance, the results show that state transition algorithms are
promising algorithms due to their good global search capability and convergence
property when compared with some popular algorithms.Comment: 18 pages, 28 figure
Charged black holes: Wave equations for gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations
A pair of wave equations for the electromagnetic and gravitational
perturbations of the charged Kerr black hole are derived. The perturbed
Einstein-Maxwell equations in a new gauge are employed in the derivation. The
wave equations refer to the perturbed Maxwell spinor and to the shear
of a principal null direction of the Weyl curvature. The whole
construction rests on the tripod of three distinct derivatives of the first

The Robustness of Estimators for Dynamic Panel Data Models to Misspecification
It is well known that the usual techniques for estimating random and fixed effects panel data models are inconsistent in the dynamic setting. As a consequence, numerous consistent estimators have been proposed in the literature. However, all such estimators rely on certain well defined assumptions, which in practice may often be violated. The purpose of this paper is to ascertain how robust the available estimators are to such misspecifications, thus providing guidance to the applied researcher as to an appropriate choice of estimator in such situations
